UPDATE: University Parkway is back open Tuesday morning following Monday's flatbed truck accident.  I-75 southbound is still reduced to just one lane at the University Parkway exit (#213).

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - A damaged overpass over University Parkway is causing major traffic issues in the area.

A flatbed truck carrying pile driving equipment was headed southbound on I-75 shortly before noon Monday.  As it passed over University Parkway, a piece of equipment called a pile driving cushion fell off the truck, damaging the concrete roadway in three spots.

All southbound lanes of I-75 were shut down for hours before FHP troopers re-opened one lane around 3:30pm.

Traffic in both directions of University Parkway were also closed, and should remain closed overnight while engineers inspect the overpass for more damage.  FHP says they hope to have one lane open each direction by morning.

All northbound lanes of I-75 have remained open, but have still experienced lengthy backups as well.

And now there is a terrible accident on southbound I-75, near route 70. Cars upside down and on side, really bad.

I sincerely hope that they press criminal charges on the teacher that killed the infant in the day care center. She should be in jail and never ever be allowed to around infants again

There are just a couple ways to get out of Lakewood Ranch. It was easier when we could use the southern "extension" of Lakewood Ranch Blvd. called Wendall Kent Rd. which leads to Richardson Rd. then to Fruitville Rd. I don't know why, but that road was shut down some time ago. So if you work in Lakewood Ranch Corp Park and there is a substantial traffic problem you can 1) sit in your car in traffic and burn gas going nowhere; 2) work late - but in this case until 2am when they expect to open Univ Pkwy; or 3) hang out at an eatery inside the Lakewood Ranch border and attempt to get home later. I've worked here for 11 years, and have been "stuck" in LWR many times. It stinks.

This is ridiculous negligence. I hope the driver, his company, or his insurance company are being held responsible for the damages.

Seems as though they could have traffic go west on SR 70 to Lockwood Ridge Rd, then south to University then east back to I-75 and get on the southbound ramp there.
